StoryCloud App: Recording Memories via Voice
Role: Founder, Product Designer
Growing up, my parents used to love sharing childhood stories at dinner. But now that we live apart, it’s hard to find time for these conversations. I wanted a solution that enabled our loved ones to easily capture memories and share them with family and friends, preserving their stories and voices for the future.
The Challenge: Design a mobile app to capture and share memories on-the-go, strengthening intergenerational bonds.
1.0 Focus Groups
To better understand the challenges and behaviors surrounding personal storytelling, I led 5 focus groups organized by generation (Z, Millenials, X, and Boomers). These conversations led to critical insights that informed the user flow and ideation process.
2.0 Feature Wireframes & Testing
Next, I sketched out low-fidelity mockups of potential features via Figma, and gathered feedback on user appeal via a quantitative survey sent to 60 individuals.
Here are some example results …
3.0 User Journey
I prioritized the features and landed on a streamlined user journey for StoryCloud.
5.0 User Testing & Ethnographic Diaries
For the next step, I created an MVP workflow and conducted 10 ethnographic diaries with grandparents.
I scheduled an introductory zoom call, provided users with a list of 20 prompts to choose from, and asked them to record as many short stories as they wanted for 2 weeks.
The participants wrote down delight and pain points from their experience, which we discussed during the debrief session.
After receiving their voice memos, I transcribed their selected favorites using Otter ai, and compiled the materials into a link (e.g. www.storycloud.io/christie), which could be shared with family / friends.
An important thing we learned from these diaries is that storytellers often wished they had thought-starters. As a result, we thought to integrate ChatGPT in the recording workflow to provide guiding questions for the user.
6.0 App Development
Finally, I designed high-fidelity mockups for the web app and am currently leading a. team of engineers to bring this app to life. We are hoping to launch for beta testing in Dec 2024! Click the link below to learn more and sign up for the waitlist :)
